Importance of Mumps Treatment in Children

What it mumps?

In the world of medicine, called parotitis mumps epidemic. The disease is often a plague because the cause is a paramyxovirus that spreads from one person to another through direct contact or through infected objects (eg toys and stationeries). Mumps can occur at any age, but before childhood and after age 40 is rare.

Paramyxovirus has a specific target of the salivary glands. The virus is most likely to affect the parotid glands located in front of and below the ears. Gland that sits at the jaw was also affected.

Are the signs and symptoms of mumps?

Appeared fever, weakness, malaise inside or behind the ear, and difficulty chewing and swallowing. Not long after, the parotid glands will experience swelling and pain.

What are the complications?

Paramyxovirus can spread down to the reproductive apparatus of the testicles in men and ovaries in women. These organs to swell and become stiff and painful. The virus also can spread to the pancreas which causes the patient nausea, vomiting, and fever. It can also spread to the ear, causing hearing loss. And the most serious is if the virus infects the lining of the brain.

How to protect against this disease?
Children aged 12-15 months recommended for MMR vaccination.

How is the treatment?


  •     Much rest.
  •    Drink plenty of water, and avoid fluids that can irritate the salivary glands such as orange juice.
  •     Give soft foods such as porridge and mashed vegetables.
  •     If fever, treat it with warm water compress, drug paracetamol.
  •     Give a mouthwash to cleanse and refresh the mouth.
  •     If there are signs of complications, immediately take your child to the doctor.
