The benefits of eating vegetables and fruits are not only good for digestion. Experts say that eating vegetables and fruit often can keep stress out and prevent depression.

Professor John Cryan from University College Cork said the fiber content in fruits and vegetables stimulates good bacteria in the intestine to produce the SCFA enzyme. This enzyme is said to play a major role in lowering stress levels.

"With decreasing levels of stress, the risk of experiencing psychiatric problems such as anxiety and depression derivatives can also be reduced," Cryan said, quoted by The Sun.

The study was conducted on mice fed high fiber foods. The mice then analyzed the levels of good bacteria in their digestion, and tested their stress levels.

The results of the study said that fiber-rich intake makes mice happier, and reduces the risk of experiencing anxiety and depression.

Even so, researchers do not know what the role of fiber can be so that the production of SCFA enzymes increases. Researchers suspect this has to do with the nature of good bacteria in the intestine that thrives if fiber consumption increases.
